Good But the Original Was Better
Submitted on: 2008-12-23
This is a good album however it doesn't have the dark gloomy feel to it that most 90's black metal albums have. Plus it doesn't have the intro to Alt Lys Er Svunnet Hen and Sorgens Kammer, but they were forced to because their keyboardist at the time plagiarized the work. The intro was plagiarized off the Magnum song "Sacred Hour" and Sorgens Kammer came from the video game "Agony" (don't belive me look it up). Even though with these downs I was amazed on how soild they made the songs, and besides these guys are one hell of a band.
Great Re-record.

Stormblast was always my favorite album from this band.Iam glad they didnt alter the songs too much, which what i was afraid of when i bought the album.
The production is way more polished( but less audible)but thats about it.
The piano intro and another track is gone(due to plagiarism on the keyboardist's part)thus the inclusion of the unreleased songs to make up for the two lost ones.
Dont buy it if you do not like the original Stormblast or are only a fan of the new (purtania) dimmu.
I didnt care much for the DVD,as it was only newer songs, for the most part, but it was a nice thought. But still entertaining to watch Galder's Cheesy faces none the less.
Waste of time money maker

Let me first start by giving a bit of history behind the remaking of this album. Back in the mid 90's, Dimmu Borgir, still a relatively unknown norwegian black metal band released an album on cacophonous records called Stormblast. It received great reviews, giving Dimmu Borgir the momentum to surpass Gehenna as the "next big thing" in black metal. Shagrath and Silenoz however, weren't happy. They hated the guitar sound on this album, complaining it let the album down.

Okay, well in my opinion, the low production and somewhat fuzzy guitars made this album by far the best of all their releases. Beautiful keyboard passages, even a sample from Dvorak's New World Symphony, and harsh, reverbed vocals by Silenoz, in Norwegian. The atmosphere behind this album was incredible, melancholic black metal, ala bergtatt era ulver, and early aeternus.

Now forward 10 or so years, and Dimmu Borgir are one of the biggest rockstar bands in the world. They have released one dismal album after another, progressively getting worse and worse. Between writing their next album, they needed some extra cash, probably to pay for the services of Hellhammer. So what did they do, they jumped into Abyss Studios, just Silenoz, Shagrath and Hellhammer by themselves, and recorded a guitar oriented version of a now classic.

Absolute rip off. Never tamper with old music, you may not like it for what it was, but there will always be people who will. This is the final insult, and quite frankly, buying this album is what allowed them to get away with making In Sorte Diaboli.
From someone who never heard the original: Excellent!

I love this CD. It holds up well over repeated listenings, and in fact I think I may enjoy it more than their 2007 release. The songs are strong and melodic without needing the grandiosity of the orchestra used on their later albums. Definitely for the fan of melodic death/black metal.
Very good release of a new version of a classic

Didn't want to get it when I first heard about it. Believed it would be just a soft remix that would not sound much different than the original. Listened to a few songs and gave it a try. Excellent remix. Songs brings back memories of when I listened to the original regularly years ago but a nice twist to each of the songs.
